Video course "Captain of your own sailboat"

I will answer to questions about purchasing Fortissimo 33

A step-by-step guide on buying, sailing and owning a boat from A to Z

For those who want to purchase a sailboat, learn how to handle it and to maintain it

WHO AM I?

My name is Vadim Luppo. As of 2024, I have visited 24 countries: some by sailboat, others by land.

I have been on continuous travels for over 8 years.

I have been sailing for over 12 years. I have owned 5 yachts, starting with a dismountable catamaran and a 1200 euro sailboat.

Now I have a super renovated Hallberg-Rassy 382. Its value is about 300,000 euros.

During this time I have studied a huge amount of information. I have done some serious journeys: around Europe (from Sweden to Africa)and a passage to Japan on my current sailboat.

In this presentation, I've prepared something interesting for you.

Something that will help make your dream of a sailboat come true very soon!

Please take this seriously and read carefully from beginning to end. Thank you!

I have dozens of journeys that I could talk about, but I will tell you about the two longest and most interesting ones.
MY SAILING JOURNEYS
A 70-day journey from Sweden to Africa in 2018
Boat: Albin Vega, 8.25 meters
A 70-day journey from Sweden to Africa in 2018
Boat: Albin Vega, 8.25 meters
  • Prepared a new sailboat for a voyage in just 5 days
  • Passed the English Channel: tides up to 12 meters, currents up to 6 knots
  • Crossed the Bay of Biscay, which many captains fear.
  • Passed more than 100 canal locks in French canals
  • Passed the Gulf of Lyon, famous for Mistral winds
  • I discovered Tunisia for many as a cheap and comfortable place for mooring. Prices are up to 5 times lower than in Europe
  • Completed the entire route without any serious issues or breakdowns
  • The journey was without AIS, radar, and other devices that greatly simplify life
A 40-Day Journey from Malaysia to Japan in 2023
Boat: Hallberg-Rassy 382, 12 meters
A 40-Day Journey from Malaysia to Japan in 2023
Boat: Hallberg-Rassy 382, 12 meters
  • I've prepared the new sailboat very thoroughly for offshore voyages
  • Passed the Strait of Malacca (the busiest strait in the world by number of ships)
  • Sailed through the Singapore Strait (also with very challenging navigation conditions)
  • Non-stop passages for 7 days without opportunity to enter the port
  • Passed the pirate region of Palawan next to the notorious Sulu Bay
  • Dealt with all the complexities of entering and using a yacht in Japan
  • The entire route was navigated at the turn of the seasons. This route can only be sailed at a specific time — one month a year. Other times, either the typhoon season or unfavorable winds can prevent the passage
  • Completed the journey without any serious issues, breakdowns, or incidents
  • I've used all the modern features: active AIS, the latest radar with target highlighting, satellite phone, etc.
To sum up, I have a lot of practical experience, including experience in challenging regions.
First and foremost, I am a practitioner. I've traveled on both small boats ( is just 8.25 meters) without navigation equipment and large, fully equipped boat (, a 12-meter boat, weighing over 10 tons when fully loaded).

Video course “Captain of your OWN sailboat”

My team and I have made a complete video course that will help you become a true captain of your OWN yacht.

So many schools and courses prepare people to charter modern mainstream yachts.

Our video course is oriented to DIFFERENT SIZES of cruising sailboats, to OWNING a sailboat, to buying YOUR OWN SAILBOAT.

The video course also works offline, so you can use it even at sea!
You will get 12 years of experience packed
420 videos are already available. We will continue to update the course and regularly add new topics.
1 QUESTION OR 1 TOPIC - 1 VIDEO
So you can always find information easily. It will be like an encyclopedia and reference book for you in video format.
What you will learn:
How to decide on the choice of a sailboat and not make a mistake
This is theoretical preparation. You'll have an idea of what yachts exist, view analysis of different types of sailboats and specific models, regions of purchase and sale, different solutions depending on the budget
How to sail a yacht, full training course
With detailed practical examples: using the example of the (8 meters, tiller), Marieholm 32E (10 meters, tiller) and (12 meters, steering wheel).
Self survey
Large section on how to inspect a boat. What to look at, how to check. Examples of good and bad situations, how to evaluate potential repairs
Preparing a yacht for different level travels

Coastal travel, sea crossings up to 200 miles away from the coast.

Sea crossings with a distance of up to 1000 miles and autonomy of up to 7-10 days.

Ocean crossings without restrictions and autonomy of up to 100 days.

How to turn sailing from a money-losing hobby into a profitable one

I've sold all my boats at a profit. With the help of friends, we've developed various concepts for buying and selling. I'll tell you how to always stay in plus.

When sailing does not take money from the family budget, and sometimes even gives a little, it is doubly pleasant.

We're not talking about business, but about optimization where sailing doesn't lead to losses. It remains a hobby, but becomes a profitable hobby.

Different sizes of sailboats explained

The complexity of systems depending on the size and budget of the yacht.

We analyze all the systems, how it works, how to maintain it, how much it costs, how to install, etc.

Sailboat ownership issues
How to find moorings. Maintaining your sailboat. Carrying out repairs. Handling paperwork: registering your sailboat, crossing international borders, etc.
Upgrade for autonomy and comfort
Analysis with a practical example of such devices and systems as wind autopilot, watermaker, aircon, arch with solar panels, wind generator, lithium, radar, active AIS, satellite phone, Starlink, generator, etc.
My personal experience in all questions
I’ll tell you where I was wrong, where I did well, I’ll warn you against mistakes that could cause you injuries or financial losses. Sometimes we’re talking about tens of thousands of euros!

In this video course, I've tried to cover all the nuances you need to know as a sailboat owner and captain.

Knowledge from complete beginner to full-fledged captain. And I also tried to share all my experience.

Small yachts of 7-10 meters are quite different from medium and large yachts of 10-14 meters.
Video course is recorded on the example of 3 yachts of different sizes:
1
Small Sailboats:
Albin Vega
Optimal for traveling along the coast. Occasional sea crossings of up to 7 days
Is it theoretically possible to go around the world?
Yes, but the comfort level will be low
Can it theoretically be used for permanent living?
Yes, the comfort level will be decent if you live with marina utilities. I personally lived with my girlfriend on such a boat for half a year.
Length 8.25 m (27 ft)
Width 2.46 m (8 ft)
Sail Area 27 m² (296 ft²)
Weights only 2.3 tons (moves with hands in the marina)
Water reserve 60 liters + jerrycans (expandable to 200 liters)
Perfect crew size is 2 people (up to 4 in theory)
Simple systems, simple plumbing, simple electrics, minimal repairs, easy handling
Control with a tiller (maximum responsiveness, affordable autopilot, less maintenance, cheaper repairs)
Ceiling height is 1.7 meters, in the galley area it's 2.5 meters under the sprayhood
Kitchen available
Toilet available

Using this sailboat Albin Vega as an example, I will show how easy it is to operate a small yacht. Arrange comfortable living, choose and buy it.

I will show all the technological solutions (they differ from large yachts). I will show how to maintain such a yacht for 100-150 euros in month (including the mooring fee).

2
Mid-sized Sailboats:
Marieholm 32E
A great combination of comfort and maintenance cost. Comfort is significantly higher compared to smaller sailboats.
Is it theoretically possible to go around the world?
Yes, it is the best option for a small budget
Can it theoretically be used for permanent living?
Yes, the comfort level would be significantly higher compared to Albin Vega
Length 9.75 meters (32 feet).
Width 3 meters (10 feet)
Sail Area 36 m² (383 ft²)
Weight 4.2 tons (still movable by hand, but it's getting harder)
Water reserve 130 liters + jerrycans (expandable to 300 liters)
Optimal crew size is 2-3 people (up to 5 in theory)
Still simple systems, simple plumbing, simple electrics. Few repairs, easy operation
Control with a tiller (maximum responsiveness, affordable autopilot, less maintenance, cheaper repairs)
Ceiling height 1.9 meters
Kitchen available
Toilet available

Using this Marieholm 32E sailboat as an example, I'll show you how it differs from smaller sailboats. I'll show how to dock it, guide you through choosing and buying one, and reveal all the technical solutions (which are different from larger sailboats).

I'll also explain how to maintain such a sailboat on a budget of 150-200 euros per month, including mooring fees.

3
Large sailboats:
Hallberg-Rassy 382
Comfort comparable to apartments. Lots of space, lots of supplies, complex systems, expensive maintenance.
Is it theoretically possible to go around the world?
Yes, it's a great option for a circumnavigation, but it requires a good budget.
Can it theoretically be used for permanent living?
Yes, the comfort level would be comparable to a small house or apartment (2 bedrooms, 1 kitchen-living room)
"Length 11.62 meters (38 feet)
Width 3.64 meters (12 feet)"
Sail Area 70 m² (759 ft²)
Weight with equipment is 10 tons. It's not advisable to adjust manually as it may lead to injuries
Water supply 580 liters + watermaker (relatively infinite amount of fresh water)
Complex and costly systems like electric winches, bow thrusters, lithium batteries, hot water with a shower, both 12v and 220v electrical systems, AC, a built-in refrigerator. A lot of maintenance.
Optimal crew size is 2-5 people (up to 7 in theory)
Offshore equipment: wind autopilot, watermaker, solar power station, generator, wind generator, satellite phone, satellite internet, etc.
Control with a steering wheel (requires maintenance, autopilot is much more expensive)
Full set of navigation equipment: chartplotter, anemometer, radar, active AIS, VHF radio with AIS, depth sounder, and other sensors.
Ceiling height 2.05 meters
Shower and toilet
Using my Hallberg-Rassy 382 sailboat as an example, I'll show you how to handle a large sailboat. How to make it as comfortable as full-fledged apartments, how to choose and buy one. I'll demonstrate all the technological solutions (which are different from those on smaller sailboats).
SO THE COURSE IS SUITABLE BOTH FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BUY LARGE OR SMALL YACHTS.

Because we've covered all segments, no matter which sailboat you want to buy for yourself. You'll have examples of what to deal with and how to handle it.

You'll have video examples for possible real-life situations in sailing or an understanding of how to find a solution.

For example
The deck on the and Marieholm 32E is plastic, while on the it is teak. You will see how to care for both, learn the pros and cons, and will not be afraid of teak.

How can you lose really big money? (soon!)

The high price of a sailboat doesn't mean it won't have issues. I've seen sailboats for €200,000 and €300,000 with big problems. Sometimes these problems are hidden, and when you buy such a sailboat, you might need to invest an additional €50,000 - €100,000 to turn it into a really good boat that can sail safely.

Moreover, often solving these problems does not increase the value of the boat, that is, it is really a loss of a lot of money due to lack of knowledge.

Hull deformation, hull delamination, osmosis, engine replacement, bad teak that can't be sanded, faulty seacocks, old rigging, portholes and hatches, bad mast, worn sails, outdated electronics with issues, old electrical system with problems, old plumbing with issues.

How to sell a boat profitably? (new!)
  • When buying a boat, we immediately think about how and for how much we can sell it later. This helps us make the right decision about the purchase—a rational one, not an emotional one
  • Which costs pay off and which don’t? What is an investment and what is a loss?

How to grow a 30-100k value boat in 3-5 years by buying and selling different boats, starting with a 1000 euro boat (new!)

Let's say you have between 3,000 and 10,000 euros, you are a beginner, and you want to start with a small boat to get your first experience, but then you want to buy a bigger boat and then maybe even bigger one.

With my approach, you'll be able to buy good sailboats at a low cost and sell them for a significantly higher price by making minor changes and changing their location.

This isn't a business, but it will be an enjoyable hobby. Over the years, you'll gain experience, you'll have owned several boats, and most importantly, you'll be able to buy the sailboat of your dreams this way.

The process is roughly like this: you buy a boat for 3000 euros, improve its appearance a bit, and then sell it somewhere else where boats are more expensive (for example, you might transport it from Sweden to Germany), and there it can worth 6000-8000 euros!

If you start with 10,000 euros, you can transport a 32-foot sailboat to the Mediterranean Sea over the summer and sell it there for 25,000 euros. This has all been tested in practice by me and my readers.

It's important to strictly follow the criteria when buying and selling, otherwise, there won't be a profit, and you might even face a loss.

My concept in this approach is to make sailing should be an asset rather than a liability, or at least not to take a lot of money from your family budget. When this happens, the joy of sailing increases a lot!

On larger sizes, it also works. For example, you can buy an HR352 in Sweden for 50,000 - 70,000 euros and sell it in the Mediterranean for 80,000 - 100,000 euros.

It's not magic or a trick; the boat mostly increases in value due to a change of location. If someone wants to buy such a boat, they will have to hire a skipper, an assistant, and all of this is very expensive.

A skipper costs about 3 euros per nautical mile, a helper costs about 100 euros per day, a commercial ferrying of a boat from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea can cost 15000-20000 euros, but commercial ferrying means responsibility for someone else's boat, working conditions, no freedom, and here you sail your own boat, do what you want, and in the end you get the same money, maybe less, but it is also less stress.

In the webinar you receive a step-by-step algorithm with specific numbers and a plan by steps and years.

Overview of main sailboat types from 22 to 50 feet (coming soon!)

The main purpose of this section is to introduce you to the basic concepts of boats and to convey an understanding of what each boat is designed for, you should not neglect these nuances, or you may be in for a big disappointment.

We'll look through a lot of different manufacturers, you'll get a good understanding of boats.

  • Folkboat (Swedish folk boat, which, one might say, marked the beginning of all Swedish boats for ordinary people)
  • Albin, (including Albin Vega and Albin Ballad), Marieholm, Amigo, Allegro, Contessa, Hurley, Havsfidra, Storfidra, etc. (typical Swedish, Danish, Finnish and British boats, inexpensive and very reliable, some people sail around the world on them)
  • Maxi, Sunwind, and similar boats (cruisers with enhanced comfort and space)
  • Beneteau, Bavaria, Jeanneau, Hanse, Dufour, Hunter, etc. (Mainstream boats, which are often used by charter companies, poorly suit for serious cruising, after 20 years got many problems, many things need to be replaced, especially if the boat has been used a lot).
  • Catalina, Pearson, C&C (shipyards that have been making popular boats for the USA for a long time)
  • Tayana, Baba, and others (These are very heavy boats with a long full keel, which perform poorly in light winds, are difficult to dock as they usually don't have a bow thruster, better suited for circumnavigation and anchoring, with lots of wood inside, very cozy, and have large water and fuel capacities.)
  • Rustler 37 (a modern cruise boat made with classic solutions, an English classic, there was a long period when they were not produced, now you can order a new one)
  • Pacific Seacraft (another shipyard with a classic approach to boat building (like in the 70-80s), long keel, price for new boats starts from 300k euros for 31 feet. Very cool and seaworthy boats, opportunity to buy a boat like in the 70s-80s, but with modern comfort.
  • Island Packet (very spacious boats, 28 feet inside feels like 36 feet, cutter rig, special system for the staysail) — excellent vessels for circumnavigation, they have many advantages and are very livable. They are like the American equivalent of HR in terms of quality, meaning these sailboats are of very high quality, and many dream of owning one.

One of the few sailboats with a long keel that you can buy new.

  • Hallberg-Rassy, Najad, Malo (my favorite type, with a combined long keel, modern HRs already have a bolt-on keel) — habitable and comfortable for both short trips and long voyages. They are convenient for entering marinas, and many have a bow thruster or can have one installed. HR is considered the most desirable brand in the world according to the German Yacht magazine.
  • Fisher, Nauticat and similar (motorsailers that are well-suited for cold regions, with an enclosed cockpit, comfortable boats for harsh conditions)
  • Amel and Oyster (shipyards with their own approach, but very famous boats for long journeys)
  • Baltic and other similar racing cruisers
  • Long boats for skerries racing, length is 35-40 feet, and width is only 2.2-2.5 meters, very uncomfortable, you pay for everything as for 40 feet, and habitability as if it is 27 feet

STEP-BY-STEP PLAN
By following this plan step by step, you will realize your dream of owning a sailboat. Everything is real!
Step 1. Buy the package

Buy the "Captain of your OWN Sailboat" video course package and my book "Buying a Sailboat from A to Z" with all the bonuses.

Step 2. Take the "Captain of Your Own Sailboat" video course

Watch the videos, and you'll gain an understanding of how to choose a sailboat, how to handle it, how to maintain it, and so on.

It's also worth getting some practice at a school or with an experienced captain.

Some of you will be able to come and visit me.

Step 3. Read the book
You read the book, it helps you come to an understanding of what kind of boat you need, for what purposes, etc. You have an outline of the goal and a plan for realization.
Step 4. Buy a sailboat

Choose your sailboat wisely. After the course, you'll have a clear understanding of what you need to buy, what to pay attention to, how to use it, and so on.

If you have questions — then you contact me for consultation, I will help you.

Step 5. Prepare the sailboat for voyage, get your own experience

Once you buy the boat you will need to register it, make any small improvements you want to make, perhaps do some minor repairs.

Next, you'll start making your first voyages and gaining your own experience.

You can also ask me for help at this stage and I will answer any questions you may have.

Step 6: If necessary, sell the first boat for a profit and buy a new one

After buying your first sailboat, you'll gain more experience and start to understand what you want in practice. Most likely, you'll buy your next boat.

If you follow my recommendations, the budget for a new boat will increase with each transaction due to the sale of the previous boat.

ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS
I've tried to answer all the questions you might have now
What's included in the "Captain of Your OWN Sailboat" video course?

The course includes all the essential knowledge for sailboat handling (a program similar to RYA or IYT, but more focused on practical skills). You'll also gain knowledge and experience in purchasing and maintaining a sailboat. I'm preparing you to own a sailboat, not just to charter one.

The course is made up of short videos, with a separate clip for each topic. This is done for easy understanding. So you can always come back to the topic you're interested in, watch a 5-15 minute video, and refresh your memory.

420 videos are already available. We will continue to update the course and regularly add new topics.

The list of topics can be found on this website.

By purchasing the course, can I really be entered into a prize draw for a yacht?

Yes, by buying the course and filling out the form, you can win Leisure 23SL sailboat, we already bought it to raffle off among those who bought the package “Captain of Your Own Sailboat”.

Draw will be held on 11/30/24

To participate, you need to buy the package “Captain of your own sailboat”.

How will the winner of the sailboat drawing be determined?

Randomly among people who have bought my video course "Captain of Your Own Sailboat" and left an application for the drawing of a sailboat. The drawing process will be demonstrated on social media (live or in video format).

We will also record a separate video with the winner when we meet for passing the sailboat.

By what date do I need to buy the video course to enter the sailboat drawing?

I reserve the right to close entries for the drawing at any time, but at the moment you can take part, it's better to buy the package now and not put it off until later as I can shut down the possibility.

How will ownership be transferred after the sailboat drawing?

You and I will make a contract of sale, in which will be written some nominal amount (for example, 1000 euros), and make an act of transfer, as if you gave me this amount. Or we can make a deed of gift, as you prefer, it is not important to me.

How soon will I need to arrive? What if I can't pick up the boat?

The sooner the better, you need to arrive within a week after the raffle dates and pick up the boat. We will need time for some practice and a brief instruction on your questions.

If you refuse to pick up the boat — we'll just pick the next winner at random and they'll come and pick it up. It's not a big deal.

What expenses will await the person who wins the sailboat?

You will need to register the boat (it’s up to you, I will tell you what options are available), most likely third party liability insurance (about 100 euros per year), pay for winter mooring. For example, in Estonia, the mooring fee for the whole winter will cost about 200 euros (not per month, but for the whole season!).

It may be necessary to buy something else, some things, clothes, equipment, etc. I suggest to have a few thousand euros in reserve to feel comfortable.

Whether it is possible to deliver the sailboat I won to a certain city or country?

No, I will pass the boat to you in the Stockholm area and then you will have to ferry it yourself.

Why are you doing this? Why would you gift sailboats?

I want people who buy my course and book to have the opportunity to own a boat, even if they don't have the financial ability right now. It's also a great bonus that increases the attractiveness of my course and book offer, which means it should theoretically be profitable for me :)

I gift a sailboat because it's nice for everyone and profitable for everyone! :)

What's the secret bonus?

It's a pleasant surprise for those who've bought the package, you'll find out after you make the purchase ;)

What is the "Captain of Your Own Sailboat" video course focused on. How does it differ from IYT and RYA courses?

The course is aimed at giving all information about owning a sailboat of 7-15 meters. These are the yachts that I show you on social networks.

Most schools teach with the expectation that you will charter a yacht. Also, the handling of a small sailboat is somewhat different from the large yachts on which they train in schools. For example, setting and adjusting the sails is done a little differently, and the moorings are also slightly different.

These are the insights that most schools don't provide!

In my opinion, after my course you will be better prepared to own and sail both small and large yachts. This is not self-promotion, but my reference point. I make a product for specific purposes, narrower than those of sailing schools. This course is specifically for members of our community, with all the nuances we require.

What if I want to get an IYT or similar certificate?

You can do an internship at any school based on this theory, i.e. all you need is practice.

Is video course “Captain of your OWN Sailboat” already ready?

420 videos are already available. We will continue to update the course and regularly add new topics.

The list of topics can be found on this website.

What is the book “Buying a Sailboat from A to Z” about?

The book gives step-by-step instructions on how to buy an inexpensive but good yacht in Europe. The topic is covered from A to Z. Also, the book tells how to prepare the yacht for the voyage quickly and take the boat from Sweden to the Mediterranean.

You can check out the list of topics of the book here.

Is the book in paper form or digital format?

The book is digital, and it works on any device with a browser, both online and offline (after the first download). Since the book is in electronic format, you get it instantly, and I can update and add new topics (which I do all the time).

What if I've already read your book?

Check your email, there's a special offer for readers. If you haven't received this offer — contact me on social media or by email.

How can I get help with buying a sailboat?

Just message me on social media, tell me about your situation. I'll do my best to help.

How can I buy the whole package?

Just click the “Buy” button, then enter your e-mail in the form, click “Buy”, pay, and access will be sent to your e-mail.

Why is it worth buying the package, even if it is not possible to buy a sailboat now due to financial considerations?

You have to walk towards your dream, even if you walk slowly, even if you crawl. If you can't crawl, you have to lie down in the direction of your dream. In this case, you take the first step, it is usually the most difficult, and then life usually presents us with different options, different opportunities.

One of these opportunities is to win a sailboat, which is quite possible, but not the only one. Life offers many chances, so by taking the first step, you'll start to see where to take the second step, then the third, and so on.

Now's your chance to take the first step, will you do it?

What languages are the video course and book available in?

The course and book are translated into: Dansk, Deutsch, Eesti, English, Español, Français, Hrvatski, Italiano, Latviešu, Lietuvių, Magyar, Nederlands, Norsk, Polski, Português, Română, Slovenčina, Suomi, Svenska, Türkçe, Čeština, Ελληνικά, Български, Русский, Українська, العربية, 中文, 日本語, 한국어. There are also subtitles available in all the listed languages.

I've detailed all the benefits of my product very thoroughly, so I won't repeat myself. The only question left is: what's best for you? Do you think this purchase will bring you closer to your dream?

In matters of putting off "for later", I usually convert the rest of my life until age 60 into days, and I end up with less than 10,000 days left. As a result, I quite often decide that it’s better to do it and regret it than not to do it and regret not doing it :)

Ask yourself honestly, what's better for you, and make a decision!
